PORTLAND District Health’s sleep studies program has been so successful that it has been extended from three to four nights a fortnight. “If your partner snores and stops breathing in the night, then see a sleep specialist,” Hamilton Sleep Disorder Centre unit manager Sophie Hannah said following the extension of the program.

Ms Hannah supports sleep and respiratory physician Dr Andrew Bradbeer, and said people who are found to receive benefits from using a CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine have been shown to live longer than those who don’t use it.

Dr Bradbeer receives referrals from GPs if their patients have suffered from broken sleep patterns, obstructive sleep apnoea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome or simply a feeling of tiredness.
