Volunteers change our world

South West Healthcare has a lot to celebrate during this year’s National Volunteer Week. There’s 260 registered volunteers selflessly donating their time and expertise, for starters. Then there’s the organisation’s first-ever carers for volunteers.

Southern Way Direct Care Service carers Brett Rantall and Garry Johnson say they ‘jumped at the opportunity’ to join the organisation’s Volunteer Program this year because they wanted to make sure their very special charge didn’t miss a single ‘shift’ of a task he simply adores.

Simon Ridgwell joined the organisation’s Volunteer Program in January and according to SWH Coordinator of Volunteers, Marita Thornton, is ‘loving every minute of it’. Every Monday and Tuesday the 23-year-old’s on deck at 8 am delivering breakfast trays to patients in the Warrnambool hospital’s Medical/Surgical Ward 6, accompanied by Brett or Garry.
