United Way Glenelg (UWG) is helping to build literacy rich home environments by donating FREE children’s books to every baby born at Portland District Health (PDH).

All newborns born at PDH will receive the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) Welcome Book, Where is the green sheep?, by Mem Fox. Where is the green sheep? will be the first book to kick- start the newborns Imagination library; once signed up these babies will then go on to receive a FREE age-appropriate book each month until they turn five; The program aims to build early skills and awareness by providing children in our community a strong start in literacy.

This early connection is valuable in building a family’s awareness of the importance of early literacy, said Executive Officer Nicole Angelino

Reading to a baby early and often is a powerful experience for both a parent and child; she said.

The relationship between the two organisation has impeccable timing with the recent recruitment of a new obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr David Morris creating more opportunities for local births.

Portland District Health is delighted to partner with United Way to ensure every child born at our Hospital participates in this very successful program,” says Ros Alexander, Director of Nursing. We have an obligation to ensure the best start in life for every newborn

Newborns not born locally but living in the Glenelg Shire is still eligible to register their child for FREE books through the Maternal Health Nurse.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is funded through a partnership between Portland Aluminium and United Way Glenelg, making the DPIL possible for children who live in the Glenelg Shire

Portland Aluminium Plant Manager Peter Chellis speaks very highly of the program, The Dolly Parton imagination Library is a fantastic program, it engages the whole of community to give, act and volunteer. It is encouraging to see other local businesses supporting the initiative through both monetary and in-kind assistance.
