Local residents will have an opportunity to contribute to their community and shape the future of their health service with Portland District Health looking to recruit new board directors.

CEO Chris Giles said it would be an exciting time to become part of the PDH governance team.

With the development of a new three year strategic plan underway, we're looking to find people who like a challenge, have good ideas and want to make a positive contribution to their local community, Ms Giles said.

Ms Giles said PDH had been well served by strong local board representation.

We have a very capable board but it's always good to get new talent involved and look to the future and ensure we have the right mix of people to guide PDH, she said.

Ms Giles said the only prerequisite to joining the board was a commitment to their community. We look for a good mix of people who can work together as a team. They don’t have to all be professionals, she added.

We need people with different skills and we want to make sure we have a good gender balance.

Being a hospital board director is voluntary with the board meeting monthly.

Becoming a hospital board member gives people a real voice in planning and identifying service needs and in providing leadership, direction and accountability across the organisation, Ms Giles said.

Board members also benefit personally from their contribution. Apart from the professional development and training opportunities, being a board director is good for networking, developing an understanding of the health system and general governance, and for feeling good about contributing to such a vital local facility, Ms Giles said.

The appointments are made by the Minister for Health.

Board directors are responsible for setting strategic goals and establishing systems to ensure goals are being met.

Board directors work alongside the CEO to ensure PDH is operating in a safe and effective manner and staying on track to meet its goals, Ms Giles said.

Ms Giles said it was expected up to three new members would join the board when the new appointments are announced mid-year.
