Taking care of your health is not limited to mending broken bones or making sure your heart is beating properly.

Taking care of our emotional wellbeing is just as important as caring for our physical health and Portland District Health is playing its part in promoting good mental health.

RUOK Day is an annual national day of action that aims to get Australians connecting with friends and loved ones by reaching out to anyone doing it tough and simply asking: "Are you ok?"

On September 14 Portland District Health encouraged staff to start the conversation that could change someone’s life by hosting a staff barbecue cooked by members of the executive team.

CEO Chris Giles said more people might be connected through social media, but at the same time personal isolation remains a major problem.

We need to make sure our workmates, our neighbours and our family and friends are doing ok, Ms Giles said.

Ms Giles said the barbecue was a chance to get together with staff and remind them to think about who they can check on.

We'd like to diminish isolation and empower people to start a conversation if they’re worried that someone they know is not ok, she said.

Talking about suicide with someone at risk reduces the chances of them taking their life. It is the one thing we can all do to make a real difference. RUOK? Day is about prevention, preventing little problems turning into big problems.

The campaign encourages people to ask a friendly question, listen without judgement to what people say, encourage action while respecting the person’s right not to open up, and check in from time to time to make sure the person is ok.

Sometimes the problem is too big and it's important to encourage people who are really down to seek expert support.
