International Women’s Day on March 8 means more to Portland District Health than most organisations.

For what is believed to be the first time in the health service's long history, PDH now has an all-female executive management team and a woman as its Board of Management chairperson.

CEO Chris Giles said although having women in senior positions in health services was not uncommon; it was rare to have an all-female management team.

Of course appointments are made on the basis of who's the best person and most suited to the job, but at the moment we've got women in all senior positions, Ms Giles said.

PDH is very fortunate to have such a professional team, she said.

It's nice to recognise this on International Women's Day to honour the contribution women of today and in the past have made to our health service.

Apart from Ms Giles as CEO, the executive management team consists of Director of Nursing Ros Alexander, Director of Corporate Services Ros Jones, Director of Primary and Community Health, Fiona Heenan, Director of Medical Services Dr Cathy Bones, Chief Finance Manager Jennie Stinson and Loren Drought, Quality Manager.

Women make up half of the Board of Management which is led by Michelle Kearney.

The total PDH staff of 417 includes 368 women.

A morning tea was be held at PDH on March 8 to recognise the contribution of women to the health service.
