Volunteers play a vital role within Portland District Health.

At present we have 186 registered volunteers with Portland District Health averaging a combined total of 846 hours per month through various programs that assist the patients, clients, residents and staff.

There are many areas that use volunteers to enhance their programs.

Support in the wards: Volunteers are involved in a number of activities through out the hospital, supporting both the patients and the staff. Some of these activities include flower care, visiting with patients, administration assistance, patient support, collecting hospital equipment from people’s homes.

Community Transport and Library Bus: Volunteers will take Portland District Health clients in the Community Transport car to appointments etc. We also provide transport to the Portland library for eligible clients from their homes on a regular basis.

Harbourside Lodge (Nursing Home): Volunteers enjoy some time with the residents involving visiting, craft activities and excursions.

Seaview House (Supported Residential Service): Volunteers are involved with Seaview House residents doing craft activities, excursions and joining in their activity programs.

Palliative Care: Support to Palliative Care patients and their families in the community.

Telecare: A telephone service providing reassurance and social support. Between 9.00am and 10.00am each weekday gives a friendly ‘good morning’ call to Telecare participants in their home. These calls are made from the Community Health Centre, Otway St, Portland.

Old Timers Out and About groups: Volunteers provide support to a group of elderly people who prefer a small social setting for weekly get-togethers and social outings. The group meets casually in a friendly setting to chat, exchange ideas, information and to have fun

Meals on Wheels: Volunteers are involved in the delivery of meals to residents in their own home.

Diabetes Australia Sub Agency: Volunteers Oversee supply of diabetes equipment.
