Over the past two years Portland businessman Col Johnson has watched a lot of blood drain out of his body.

For about 45 minutes each month Col has attended the Portland District Health day procedure unit for an infusion to remove blood to reduce his high iron levels.

Col is one of about six local people who regularly have infusions at PDH.

The procedure became necessary after Col started feeling unwell and dizzy as a result of having high iron levels in his blood, although other people may experience different symptoms from the condition.

I'd have my head down working and would feel dizzy when I got up,Col said. Initially I thought I was just getting up too quickly but it persisted so I went to my doctor and they did some tests and they found I had high iron levels in my blood.

The infusions are designed to reduce Col's blood levels which will be re-built with less iron in the mix.

It's a relatively painless exercise. It's a big needle but they put a gel on for five minutes so there's just a little prick as it goes in, Col said.

I'm used to it now.

The good news is that the procedure is working and Col’s iron levels have reduced. He is now able to reduce his infusions to every three months.

Col is very impressed with the quality of care at PDH and says the staff do all they can to make him comfortable and to arrange the times to suit his work in air conditioning and refrigeration.

The girls are really good. They know I want to get back to work so they try to fit me in at the start of the day and organise it around my work, he said.

And he's happy to get back on the job without feeling dizzy!
