Rural Generalist Doctor Joins Portland Team

Dr Scott Deller, GP Anaesthetist

New Portland doctor Scott Deller describes himself as "an old fashioned” style of GP.

Dr Deller has recently joined Active Health Portland as a general practitioner and Portland District Health where he will have an evolving role including anaesthetics, emergency medicine and general practice.

"I am what is known as a procedural rural old-fashioned rural doc," he said.

"There are a lot of rural generalists in outback Queensland and Western Australia but not so many in Victoria."

The Portland appointment came about while Dr Deller was on a rural locum placement in outback Queensland.

"A medical doctor had previously worked with PDH CEO Chris Giles and told me Portland was looking for someone with anaesthetic skills. It all happened via word of mouth," he said.

I wish I had known about this role two years ago as it suits me perfectly, he said.

About two months ago Dr Deller came to Portland for a one-week trial and liked what he saw. "All went well and I thought Portland would be an ideal place for a permanent role," he said.

Dr Deller's appointment will help to broaden the range of services being offered to the community by PDH.

"The hospital was keen to have another doctor trained in anaesthetics as part of its plans to expand obstetrics and gynaecology services," he added.
