A new chemotherapy and medical oncology service will start in Portland this week.

Dr Ian Collins from South West Oncology will conduct the first oncology consultations at Portland District Health (PDH) on Thursday 26 June 2014.

Day stay chemotherapy will also soon start at PDH on a date to be confirmed within the next month.

Plans for the day chemotherapy unit started in 2010 following a successful submission for Commonwealth Department of Health funding. The new service aligns with the Victorian Cancer Action Plan which aims to deliver care to patients as close to home as possible.

The Portland chemotherapy unit will operate one day per week and will provide improved access to oncology and chemotherapy services for district residents.

The unit has been facilitated by the Barwon South Western Regional Integrated Cancer Service, in collaboration with South West Oncology, South West Healthcare, Barwon Health Cancer Services and Portland District Health.

It will be supervised by oncologists from Warrnambool-based South West Oncology, Drs Theresa Hayes, Ian Collins and Oliver Klein, and supported by on-site PDH physicians and specially trained PDH nursing staff.

Patients will be reviewed initially in Warrnambool, but if suitable, their chemotherapy and follow-up care may be delivered at PDH.
