PDH hosts Diabetes Mini Expo

A mini expo, which is being conducted in Portland on Thursday July 18, will help people with diabetes to better manage their condition and give others preventative tips on how to avoid developing diabetes.

Portland District Health is hosting the expo which will include advice from dietitians, podiatrists, community health nurse and diabetes educator.

The event is being conducted from 12.30-3pm in the PDH staff training room and is open to people with diabetes and other members of the community interested in finding out more about the condition.

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease with 280 new diagnoses every day and the Glenelg Shire has one of the highest rates in the country.

The National Diabetes Services Scheme shows 1352 people in the shire – 6.8 per cent of the population – are registered with the scheme. This compares to a national average of 5.8 per cent.

The event is being staged as part of Diabetes Week which is from July 14-20 and aims to raise awareness of all types of diabetes and how it can affect all age groups.

Diabetes Australia Vic has adopted the theme `The Face of Diabetes in Australia’ for this year’s campaign.

PDH Accredited Practising Dietitian Christine Young said many rural areas had high incidence of diabetes. “It is difficult to pinpoint exactly why our area has such a high rate,” she said.

Lifestyle factors play a significant role in people developing type two diabetes and the expo will include preventative advice.

Ms Young and fellow dietitian Melissa Yip will present a virtual supermarket tour to explain the types of food people should be eating to avoid diabetes and suitable dietary options for those with the condition.

Community health nurse Rosemary Cole will speak about the importance of exercise and suitable options for people with diabetes, and podiatrist Nikki Edwards will display suitable footwear for people with diabetes.

Diabetes educators Vicki Barbary and Judy Fenton will be providing equipment support such as blood glucose meter control checks or upgrades as required.
