Portland’s chemotherapy unit has been named as one of finalists for the South West Regional Achievement and Community Award.

Portland's chemotherapy unit has been named as one of finalists for the South West Regional Achievement and Community Award.

The chemotherapy unit at Portland District Health provided more than 240 treatments in its first year, far exceeding its original target of 90 treatments.

PDH Director of Nursing Ros Alexander said the south-west being named a finalist was fitting recognition for an important service in the local community.

Our nomination highlighted how the service continues to help people to receive their treatment close to home, Ms Alexander said.

PDH had recognised there was a need for this service and undertook an extensive planning and development process to make it happen. It has been a great success for local people, allowing cancer patients to have chemotherapy services close to home.

PDH patients receive expert consultation and care from weekly visiting oncologist Dr Ian Collins, from Warrnambool. Supporting Dr Collins, PDH has two on site physicians, a full pathology service, five specially trained chemotherapy nurses, and two pharmacists.

The award winner will be announced at Etihad stadium on October 16.
