Portland District Health’s newest physician Dr Sagarika Jayathilake is feeling right at home in her new environment.

Dr Jayathilake started work with PDH in August and says the town and the hospital have been very welcoming.

It's a beautiful city with great people; I’m enjoying my time here, she said.

Prior to arriving in Portland, Dr Jayathilake worked as a consultant physician in Sri Lanka, where she also completed her medical training.

I had been to Australia on holiday four or five times and liked it and got the idea of coming here to work, she said.

I had colleagues working in Australia who were positive about the experience so I thought I would try it when the opportunity came up in Portland.

Dr Jayathilake completed her medical studies at the University of Colombo. After qualifying she started her post-graduate training in general medicine, including time working at the National Hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s largest hospital.

Dr Jayathilake also worked for more than two years in hospitals in the United Kingdom before returning to work as a consultant physician in Sri Lanka.

In both countries she gained experience working in rural settings and small district general hospitals.

I'm familiar with the Sri Lankan and UK health systems and I've found the Australian system more or less in between them. There are minor differences between all systems.

As a specialist in general medicine, Dr Jayathilake has had a busy introduction to the wards of PDH and the consulting suites where she is available for general appointments, but she takes that in her stride.

There's definitely enough to keep me busy but I like it and it's quite challenging, she said.

Over the past two months my experience in Portland has been very good. It’s very friendly with good teamwork, which is important in a small hospital.
