A new haematology service has started at Portland District Health, expanding the range of services offered from the chemotherapy unit.

Dr Jennifer Brotchie is providing the weekly outreach service to Portland, which is being well utilised by local people and people from Mt Gambier.

Dr Brotchie is based three days per week at the South West Regional Cancer Centre in Warrnambool and is visiting Portland every Tuesday.

The new Portland service will provide chemotherapy and other treatments such as blood transfusions and infusions through the chemotherapy day unit.

It is in addition to existing oncology chemotherapy services offered each Thursday, the Tuesday sessions will focus on haematological chemotherapy regimes and overseeing other infusions for rheumatological or gastrointestinal conditions.

Local people have previously had to travel out of town to receive these services.

Originally from Echuca, Dr Brotchie has been working in Melbourne hospitals for the past nine years before relocating to Warrnambool in February.

She said the opportunity to work as both a clinician and pathologist attracted her to the profession. We do dual training with the College of Physicians and the College of Pathology which means I could learn to interpret the diagnostic tests that we do.

Haematologists treat a variety of diseases, including malignant and non-malignant conditions.

Dr Brotchie is also seeing patients in the PDH Consulting Suite.

She said the service was being well received in Portland. We are seeing a lot of local people and people from south east South Australia, she said. Patients are appreciating not having to drive to Warrnambool.
