Amy Goetz has turned her love of sport and exercise into a career and is now helping Portland people to enjoy the benefits of exercise.

Amy has recently joined Active Health Portland as an accredited exercise physiologist, working alongside Graeme Learmont who is based at Portland District Health.

Ms Goetz did her undergraduate training at Victoria University and completed her Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Deakin University.

Portland is her first appointment since graduating and the first taste of country living for the Mornington Peninsula native.

I'd been to Portland on holiday and liked it so it was a good opportunity when the job came up, she said.

Accredited exercise physiologists are able to improve quality of life and promote a healthy lifestyle, by using exercise to prevent, manage and treat complex medical conditions

They are different from personal trainers as they are university trained and able to treat clients with chronic conditions. They also differ from fellow allied health professionals physiotherapists due to their focus on the use of exercise.

Accredited exercise physiologists can support people with obesity, cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, osteoporosis, cancer, arthritis, pulmonary disease and other conditions.

Ms Goetz, who plays netball and hockey and enjoys running and gym workouts, was attracted to work in the field to help the particular clientele group.

I like the idea that people using the service who need the exercise to help them with a condition, she said.

It's a nice mix of exercise and education.

Ms Goetz will work with a variety of rehabilitation groups including cardio, pulmonary, post-surgery and diabetes management. She will also have the option of working one-on-one with individual clients.

The accredited exercise physiologists also work in conjunction with other allied health professionals.
