Patients will use Portland District Health’s new dialysis room for the first time on Wednesday.

The newly refurbished room in the south wing of the hospital will feature four dialysis chairs with a fifth machine available if needed.

The room will also be the future home of chemotherapy day services at PDH.

Director of Nursing Frank Megens said the new dialysis room would provide purpose-built and comfortable surroundings for patients. It includes a separate area for filter tanks.

The redevelopment is costed in excess of $120,000 and has been supported by a grant from the Commonwealth Government.

The room will be used later this year as a chemotherapy day unit.

Mr Megens said nurses, medical and pharmacy staff would be undertaking specialist training within the Barwon South Western Region and Melbourne over the next six months.

The chemotherapy service is expected to start around the middle of 2014. It will initially operate one day per week and service about 10 patients in its first year.

We predict that number will grow as the service develops,Mr Megens said. At the moment local residents have to go to Warrnambool, Hamilton, Geelong or Melbourne for chemotherapy services, so this will be a much-appreciated local service,he added.
