Portland District Health has expanded its diabetes team with two diabetes educators joining the service.

Gaynor Den Boer and Fleur Martin are the new faces of diabetes education, joining Vicki Barbary in the team.

The changes follow the retirement of Judy Fenton from the service she initiated nearly 30 years ago.

The National Diabetes Services Scheme shows 7.4 per cent of the local population is registered as having diabetes, compared to a national average of 5.2 per cent.

Ms Den Boer and Ms Martin bring to the diabetes service a wealth of experience having worked as registered nurses for more than 20 years in a variety of areas prior to completing tertiary qualifications in diabetes management at Deakin University and Mayfield.

The new team is keen to build on the solid base of the PDH diabetes service, leading to several exciting new developments. So far these developments include the provision locally of type 1 diabetes education seminar for teachers and pre-school teachers, commencement of continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes and revision of hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) management of inpatients.

Ms Barbary said the team planned to be progressive and provide best practice. The team is committed to professional development, sourcing the latest in diabetes management developments via webinars, presentations and symposiums, she said.

The team also invites community consultation to plan future needs to better support people living with diabetes and their family.
