The guest speaker at this year’s Portland District Health annual general meeting will present the provocative topic `how guns make for better healthcare’.

Director of Medical Services at Northeat Health in Wangaratta, Dr John Elcock, will give a military perspective on medicine during his talk on Thursday November 14 @ 7.30pm.

Dr Elcock joined the Army as a reservist in 1999 and has served the past 10 years with combat arms units. He has served overseas in Timor Leste, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

He has held his position with Northeast Health for more than 10 years. Before becoming a medical administrator he spent 13 years in full-time clinical practice, gaining his clinical Fellowship in General Practice but spending more time in emergency medicine than any other discipline. Dr Elcock is also a Board member of Bogong GP Training.

Other occupations have included teaching English to adults in Finland, writing whimsical articles for a medical tabloid and acting alongside Cate Blanchett in the movie Paradise Road.

The AGM is on Thursday 14 Nov 2013 at the Richmond Henty Hotel Blue Room starting at 7.30pm sharp. RSVP to 5521 0305 or chuppatz.pdh@swarh.vic.gov.au by November 8.
