Local Surgery Makes Life Easier For John Welsh

Things were bad enough for John Welsh when he was told he needed a knee replacement; it just got worse when he was referred away from Portland for the surgery.

However, fate intervened, giving Mr Welsh a chance to revert to his preferred option of having the procedure done at Portland District Health.

My original doctor sent me to Warrnambool and I was booked in there, but the surgeon decided to retire, Mr Welsh said.

This gave him an opportunity to try a different doctor and he couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

I decided to go instead to Active Health Portland and see Dr Debbie Carrington, Mr Welsh said. She wrote a letter to change the plans and I was able to see one of the visiting orthopaedic surgeons in Portland.

I couldn't understand why I was being sent out of town and wanted to have it done in Portland so was happy with how everything eventually turned out, he said. My wife Janette didn't like the idea of driving 100 kilometres each way when we could have the same operation done just around the corner.

Mr Welsh's knee replacement was successfully completed in March and he has nothing but praise for his surgical team and the after-care at PDH.

Everything was spot on, he said. It was my first time in the Portland hospital and I don't think you could find a better place.

He spent five nights recovering and with rehabilitation and ongoing support from PDH's district nursing team, Mr Welsh was soon back on his feet.

It's working perfectly, he said. I was back driving within eight weeks and I'm back in the garden and doing odd-jobs around the place.

Mr and Mrs Welsh moved to Portland four years ago to be closer to family.

Now 100 per cent happy with the advice from Dr Carrington, the operation and care at PDH, Mr Welsh knows where he'll go if he needs another operation.

I had osteoarthritis and my other knee is on the way, he said, blaming many years tending bar as owners of pubs in England and Australia.

If I do need another operation, I wouldn't go anywhere else, he said.
