Kelly Edwards has a chance to share her passion for Portland and community development in her new job with Portland District Health.

Ms Edwards has joined the PDH health promotion team, working mainly with the Sea Change program.

I want to help make the Portland community a good place to grow up in, she said.

Ms Edwards was born and bred in Portland before moving to Queensland. She returned to Portland to be closer to family and has rediscovered her passion for her community.

She previously worked in innovation and sustainability with Wannon Water but changed direction after reflecting on her life when she turned 30.

I questioned what I really wanted to do and decided to take a few steps back to eventually take a few steps forward and went back to uni, she said.

In 2014 Ms Edwards successfully completed a Commerce Degree at Deakin University in Warrnambool.

I liked the idea of community development and working in community-based events and doing the course gave me broader options, she said.

During her study she worked with the Committee for Portland which really ignited her passion for community development.

That reinvigorated my love of Portland and I made a life decision that this is my home and I want to stay here and contribute to the community, she said.

Her passion was further strengthened by completing the Leadership Great South Coast program.

Her health promotion role with PDH is an ideal fit.

I will be working with the Sea Change network to promote healthy living and lifestyles, including talking to cafes about adding green (healthy) food options to their menus, she said.

She will also work with the drug and alcohol team to develop youth prevention strategies.

Ms Edwards is also president of the Portland Touch Football Association.

I think it's imperative that we try to encourage a healthy lifestyle for young people growing up in Portland.
