After having two babies in Queensland, Portland’s Doreen Hoffman is able to compare the experience of giving birth in her new home town.

And the comparison is a positive one.

I couldn't have asked for anything better, Ms Hoffman said after she gave birth to Indy-Lee on January 19.

It certainly matches Queensland.

Indy-Lee was delivered by midwives and arrived without a hitch.

I was very well cared for and the midwives were great, Ms Hoffman said. They were all very helpful and it was a very easy delivery.

Having her baby close to home was the preference for Ms Hoffman.

I preferred to give birth locally rather than go to Warrnambool, she said.

Ms Hoffman and her husband Grant moved to Portland in 2013.

Thirty one babies have been born so far this financial year Portland, more than the 29 born in the entire 2013-14 financial year.

The increased numbers have followed the return of 24-7 anaesthetist coverage and the recruitment last year of gynaecologist obstetrician Dr David Morris who joined Drs Ghazala Irshad and Fariha Irshad and experienced midwives in the expanded PDH maternity team.
