Boost For Portland Ophthalmology Services

Portland people needing specialist eye care will be able to access services closer to home with the recruitment of a new ophthalmologist at Portland District Health.

Dr Robert Harvey has joined PDH and will be working three days each week from the consulting suites.

His appointment means people won't need to travel to Warrnambool or beyond for their eye surgery and consultations.

Portland District Health CEO Chris Giles said the recruitment was good news for Portland people. It means PDH can now provide a full range of eye-related services each week so local residents won't need to travel out of town, Ms Giles said.Dr Harvey has been visiting PDH each month so already has a close connection with local people. He will now be consulting in relation to anything to do with eyes and running a weekly operating list here.

Dr Harvey will practice in comprehensive ophthalmology. He has a special interest and extensive experience in glaucoma while will also see patients with other problems such as cataracts. He will be able to offer enhanced diagnostic services with OCT scans and offer laser eye treatment for a variety of conditions.

Dr Harvey came to Australia from Scotland as part of the Federal Government's area of need program. He had been the Lead Clinician in the Eye Department of the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Glasgow.

Dr Harvey obtained his medical degree from the London Hospital Medical College at the London University. Whilst completing this, he was also awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in Anatomy with Honours. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and was a Member of the Scottish Glaucoma Society.

He has a keen interest in research work and has had several studies published in peer-reviewed journals, is the main author and editor of `Practical Ophthalmology, which is available on CD and extensively used around the world, and has been an invited speaker at many national and international conferences.
